God's Word–Our Unshakable Anchor

God's Word–Our Unshakable Anchor

Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven. Psalm 119:89

Where do we turn in uncertain times? When life as we once knew it is no more, where do we look for stability and truth?

For the child of God, the Word of God has always been the place to turn. In its pages, we find God’s promises. It steadies our anxious hearts. It replaces fear with faith. It reminds us of the One Who swore to never leave us, that He would be our Defender.

In spite of how shaky the world may seem today, we can be certain that God Almighty still presides from His throne. Even though people may plot and plan and scheme, God will have His way (Proverbs 19:21).

We can be certain that He will provide for our every need (Philippians 4:19). He will do exceedingly abundantly above what we can ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). The all-sufficient One is more than able!

We can be certain that He will protect us. He has given His angels charge over us. No evil can come near us, and no plague can get through our door when God is our refuge (Psalm 91).

His goodness and mercy will follow us – chase us down – all the days of our lives, and we will dwell safely in His arms forever (Psalm 23). Allow His Word to settle your heart once and for all!

Make It Count (2): The Bold Request of Elisha

Make It Count (2): The Bold Request of Elisha
And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?’ 2 Kings 2:9

Knowing that his time was limited, the old prophet, Elijah, looked at his soon-to-be successor, Elisha, and demanded, “Ask!”

Elijah had urged Elisha to stay behind at Gilgal, Bethel, and Jericho, but he would not be shaken. He refused to leave him. Now, Elijah asked what he could do for Elisha before he was taken away. This was their final conversation, and Elijah challenged Elisha. He had come this far … make it count!

Elisha did not hesitate. He did not ask for a strategic plan, the ministry manual or keys to the building. He wanted that same God that was at work in Elijah to work in him. In fact, He wanted a double portion of that blessing! God had empowered Elijah, and Elisha knew God would do it for him too.

Suddenly, a chariot of fire whirled Elijah into the heavens. As Elisha stared after him, he saw Elijah’s mantle drift to the ground. He picked up that symbol of prophetic authority, of connection between God and man. He returned to the Jordan, struck the water, and watched in wonder as the river parted.

What will you ask Jesus today? What needs to be imparted to your life? What river needs to part? Where do you need provision, power, healing, and victory? Ask!

Elijah and Elisha—A Journey of Faith

Elijah and Elisha—A Journey of Faith

But Elisha said, ‘As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!’ 2 Kings 2:2

Elijah and Elisha – the old prophet and his young successor – labored together in Israel. As Elijah’s life neared its end, he visited four significant places.

He traveled to Gilgal, the place where Joshua circumcised the Israelite men before crossing into the Promised Land. The covenant required the shedding of blood and the rolling away of transgressions. Our Gilgal occurred on Golgotha where Jesus’ flesh was pierced, His Blood was shed, and our sins were rolled away. Elijah urged Elisha to stay, but he refused.

They traveled on to Bethel, the house of God – where all newborns are nurtured and the saints are strengthened. When we plant ourselves in His house, we will flourish (Psalm 92:13). Even though Elijah insisted he remain, Elisha persevered.

They reached Jericho, a place of battle. As God’s children, we also engage in spiritual warfare. We endure hardships, knowing that no weapon formed against us will prosper.

Leaving Jericho, they encountered the Jordan River, the symbol of death’s rising tide. Elijah struck the water with his mantle. The river parted, and they crossed on dry land.

When we accept Jesus, He refuses to leave our sides. He walks us through every trial and every triumph. When we reach Jordan’s banks, He will usher us into everlasting joy. He will never leave us.

Anointed by God—Fulfilling Divine Destiny

Anointed by God—Fulfilling Divine Destiny

Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22

Elisha was Elijah’s successor – a man of God, handpicked by God, to do the work of God.

God commanded Elijah to anoint Elisha to be the prophet in his place (1 Kings 19:16). Elijah had no vote. Why is that important? If a man had chosen Elisha, he would have felt compelled to meet his expectations. When God picks and places someone, He anoints him to fulfill his divine destiny.

God sent Moses to anoint Joshua. God sent Samuel to anoint David. God, through Jesus Christ, chose Saul on the road to Damascus. If they would have been appointed and anointed by a mere man, they would have lived up to their human opinions and expectations.

However, they were empowered by God to do what no one else could do. When you are anointed by God, the walls of Jericho fall. You stand fearlessly in front of giants. You put pen to parchment in a prison cell to write, “In all of these things, we are more than conquerors through Christ…!”

You are appointed and anointed by God. His is the only opinion that matters. The only expectations you must meet belong to Him, and He has graciously equipped you for every good work. He has picked and positioned and prepared you!

Finding God's Voice—Standing Bold in a Lost Generation

Finding God's Voice—Standing Bold in a Lost Generation

Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, and said, 'Where is the LORD God of Elijah?' 2 Kings 2:14

Like Israel, under the corrupt rule of Ahab and Jezebel, our nation has forgotten our foundation of faith. We tolerate anything but Truth, floundering in a sea of political correctness.

The prophet, Amos, envisioned a famine in the last days – not of bread or water, but of the words of the Lord (Amos 8:11). That famine does not mean that no access to the Word will exist, but that no appetite for the Word will exist. We echo the words of Elisha: “Where is the Lord God of Elijah?”

Where is that bold voice unashamed to declare the truth? Who is the person willing to announce to a lost generation that there is one true God? Jesus is not one prophet among many, a mere teacher of morality. He is our Redeemer Who now intercedes for us at the right hand of the Father.

Our Sovereign God is on His throne. He needs no political party or slick candidate with proper speaking points to shift a generation back to Him.

He needs an Elijah or Elisha to blaze brightly in a dark generation, to stand against the rising tide of evil, to speak life-giving words to change the world. We know where God is. Where are you?

Make It Count—The Boldness of Elijah

Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?’ Then I said, ‘Here am I! Send me.’ Isaiah 6:8

God sent Elijah to stand before the evil Israelite king, Ahab. At God’s prompting, Elijah boldly declared that no rain or dew would fall in the land of Israel until he said the word.

He threw down the gauntlet to a nation that served Baal, a god who purportedly brought down the rain and made the crops grow. Elijah challenged Baal and demonstrated the power of the one true God. Three and a half years later, drought had devastated Israel.

Elijah stood on God’s Word. He did what God asked him to do, and he made it count. No matter how difficult the task that God has given you, make it count. No matter how many or how few stand with you, make it count.

If He sends you into political office, speak the declarative words of truth. He may send you to the PTA, your workplace or the community center. He may ask you to usher or sing in the choir. Whatever you do, make it count!

Elijah stood in a generation where no one else was willing to speak the truth. When he did, a nation fell to its knees. Be willing to go. Be willing to stand. Be willing to speak. Make it count!

Elijah and Elisha—Making Every Moment Count

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. James 5:17

Elijah and Elisha were two men who served God and made every day count. When the whole world opposed them, they believed in the One Who called them. They shaped the world for the glory of God.

One day, as they walked along shoulder to shoulder, a chariot of fire drawn by horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah was caught up to heaven in a whirlwind (2 Kings 2:11). Elisha was left staring forlornly into the sky.

He must have thought, “Without this great prophet, what will become of us now?” We easily succumb to similar thoughts. When God moves powerfully in the life of one individual, we begin to believe that, as long as that person breathes, God can work.

But God is no respecter of persons; He displays no partiality. He has purposes for each one of us. As James points out, Elijah was a human being with the same kind of nature that we possess. And when he prayed earnestly, God answered.

"And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased". Hebrews 13:16

Elijah was just like you and me. Like him, we can make every moment count. Like him, our prayers are powerful and effective. Like him, we can impact this world with the glory of God.

BLESSING

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you and give you His peace. You will do even greater works than the miracles that Jesus performed when you believe in Him. Make every moment count!
